5th Grade Fridays! - 5th Grade Fridays! Welcome to the Cormier Youth Center’s 5th Grade Fridays! Kick off the new year with a special, 5th-grade-only drop-in program every Friday after school. This is a fun, relaxed space for students to hang out, try new activities, and connect with friends in a safe, supervised environment. Program Hours • Fridays: 3–6 PMCost • $5 per visit (No membership options) Activities Include • Open gym & sports • Arts & crafts • Video games, ping-pong, air hockey, board games • Quiet homework area • Monthly calendar of special activities Note: Youth must stay in staffed areas. Concessions • Open 3:30–4:00 PM & 5:00–5:30 PM • Items range from $0.25–$3 • Payments accepted: cash, card ($5 min), Apple/Google Pay, or MyRec fundsClosed There is no Afterschool at AYS on school closings or holidays. Community Service Projects - Event Decorations- Valentines Dance Get Involved in a Community Service Project!Looking to complete community service hours or just want to give back? We offer a variety of short-term opportunities for middle and high school students.Activities and projects vary and take place on or off site at various locations, including Community Giving Tree, Lazarus House, Bread and Roses, Atria Senior Living, Capernaum place, and One Wish Project. Meal Preparation and Service Assist in preparing and serving dinner to families in need, offering not only a warm meal but also a sense of connection and community. Speech and Debate - Speech and Debate Speech and Debate The speech and debate program will focus on building public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in participants by developing skills such as speech writing, delivery techniques, and debate strategies. Students will explore various debate formats and research contemporary issues to prepare for mock debates and potential competitions. Regular reflection sessions will help track progress and celebrate achievements. By the end, participants will develop important skills for effective communication and self-expression.Students will improve in: Argument formation Presentation skills Impromptu SpeakingWeeks 1 & 2:In our first 2 classes we will befocusing on the basics of publicspeaking so students can conveyideas effectively: presentation skills.Weeks 3 & 4:In our next few classes, we willbegin developing argumentformation skills, which is essentialfor debates.Weeks 5 & 6:Finally, after learning the essentialskills for public speaking, we willimplement these skills throughengaging activities.Students should be available each Wednesday from 4PM-5PM and have access to their own laptop or chrome book as well as their own Google account. Speech and Debate - Speech and Debate Speech and Debate The speech and debate program will focus on building public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in participants by developing skills such as speech writing, delivery techniques, and debate strategies. Students will explore various debate formats and research contemporary issues to prepare for mock debates and potential competitions. Regular reflection sessions will help track progress and celebrate achievements. By the end, participants will develop important skills for effective communication and self-expression.Students will improve in: Argument formation Presentation skills Impromptu SpeakingWeeks 1 & 2:In our first 2 classes we will befocusing on the basics of publicspeaking so students can conveyideas effectively: presentation skills.Weeks 3 & 4:In our next few classes, we willbegin developing argumentformation skills, which is essentialfor debates.Weeks 5 & 6:Finally, after learning the essentialskills for public speaking, we willimplement these skills throughengaging activities.Students should be available each Wednesday from 4PM-5PM and have access to their own laptop or chrome book as well as their own Google account. 5th Grade Fridays! - 5th Grade Fridays! Welcome to the Cormier Youth Center’s 5th Grade Fridays! Kick off the new year with a special, 5th-grade-only drop-in program every Friday after school. This is a fun, relaxed space for students to hang out, try new activities, and connect with friends in a safe, supervised environment.
